Treatment for sleep disorders

In most cases, a proper evaluation and treatment can help restore normal sleeping patterns. If you think you are experiencing symptoms of a sleep disorder, talk to your doctor. They may recommend a sleep study to evaluate and identify any abnormalities in your sleep, such as excessive snoring. They will be able to recommend a treatment plan. Often, this plan will include eliminating stress, anxiety and other factors contributing to poor sleep patterns.

Understanding sleep apnea

Sometimes, snoring can be more than just a normal, annoying occurrence during the night. It may be a symptom of a sleep disorder known as "sleep apnea."

What happens during sleep apnea

People with sleep apnea experience pauses in breathing during sleep. When your body pauses breathing, your brain wakes you up so you continue to breathe. These episodes during the night interrupt a good, refreshing sleep.

People with sleep apnea may experience additional symptoms, such as loud snoring, choking and gasping during sleep. Sleep apnea episodes may occur multiple times in a single night.

Side effects of sleep apnea

Often, people with sleep apnea are unaware of any problems with their sleep, but wake up feeling tired. The excessive sleepiness caused by sleep apnea is a serious medical issue. It can result in poor job performance and falling asleep at inappropriate times, such as during work or while driving a motorized vehicle.

Additionally, if left untreated, sleep apnea can result in symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain. It may also lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk for medical events, such as a cerebrovascular accident (stroke) or heart attack.
