Emergency care

Emergency care is the treatment of unexpected, severe medical injuries or infections. It is typically delivered in an emergency room or an ambulance. Our emergency medicine physicians stabilize your condition as quickly as possible to prepare you for the next step of care or discharge.

Emergency Conditions We Treat

You should come to the emergency department for serious, life-threatening conditions, including:

  • Broken bones
  • Chest pain
  • Cuts requiring stitches
  • Deep lacerations
  • Head injuries
  • Major burns
  • Serious illness or injury
  • Strokes
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

Our emergency services

From achieving short wait times to efficient bedside registration, the goal of our ER is to get you the diagnosis and treatment you need as quickly as possible.

Features of our ER

We know it can be stressful and even scary when you need emergency care at an ER, so we make it as easy as possible to communicate and guide you through any situation. We have incorporated numerous features that allow team members to diagnose and treat you quickly and efficiently, including:

  • Digital radiology equipment that allows radiologists and physicians to view X-rays simultaneously
  • Two-way radios between key emergency personnel for faster team communication
  • Simultaneous triage and treatment services
  • An on-site Level III Trauma Center
  • Two critical care and trauma suites
  • A separate ambulance entrance
  • Bedside registration so paperwork does not delay medical care

Fast wait times

We collaborate with emergency medical services (EMS) providers to quickly identify your needs and ensure you get the care you need as fast as possible. Similarly, we want you to get care rapidly when you come to the ER on your own. In support of that, we continuously publish our ER wait times.

Our wait times represent the average time it takes to be greeted by a qualified medical professional. We update them on a four-hour rolling average every 30 minutes. We make every effort to update you on the status of your care during your visit.

Accredited Chest Pain Center

As a Chest Pain Center accredited by the American College of Cardiology, we are committed to providing fast, exceptional care for patients with chest pain.

More often than not, chest pain is a symptom of heart disease or heart attack. When blood vessels leading to the heart are blocked, it results in less blood, and therefore less oxygen, reaching the heart muscle.

Obstetric emergency care

When you are pregnant and experiencing a health emergency, our obstetric emergency room (OB ER) is open 24/7 to serve you. Our obstetricians specialize in both emergency medicine and maternity care, so you can receive the right care more efficiently. Our OB ER is on the second floor of the main hospital. It can be accessed through the main entrance or through the emergency room entrance after hours.

In emergency situations, you may also call our 24-hour OB emergency line at (615) 316-4250.

Symptoms of emergency conditions

Two life-threatening conditions that require emergency treatment include heart attack and stroke. Knowing the signs of each can save your life or the life of a loved one.

When to visit the ER for chest pain

Chest pain of any type deserves a medical evaluation to determine its cause, especially if it is accompanied by:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness or loss of balance and coordination
  • Unexplained anxiety
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue or general weakness
  • Cold sweat
  • Palpitations
  • Paleness

Heart attacks in women

The most common symptom of a heart attack for any gender is chest pain and pressure. However, a cardiac event can present differently in women. Some warning signs more common in women include:

  • Jaw, neck and upper back pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Shortness of breath

When to visit the ER for a stroke

When a hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke happens, part of your brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs. When a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked, brain cells begin to die. The faster you receive emergency medical treatment, the more likely you are to make a full recovery. It is important to learn and recognize the symptoms of a stroke quickly.

Call 911 immediately if you suddenly experience:

  • A severe headache with no known cause
  • Numbness or weakness in your face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Difficulty walking or extreme dizziness
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Confusion or difficulty speaking and comprehending
